Should I consider this in my search? The wife likes the body style and how it’s a 2+”2" in case of emergencies. Are they reliable? Are they comfy? Will they leave me broke and sad like a M3 can?

Other than the throttle posistion actuators, my E9X M3 has been very reliable.

I’m worried about brakes and the such. I’ve thought about M3 but the ones I want are out of the price range

That’s service position. Not unreasonable for something as big as timing chain, but is unreasonable for something like a thermostat.

Just heard an s4 with a LOT of underwood noise. Should be a cheap s4 in the Santa Cruz area soon.

Depends on the mileage really. But if there’s a warranty on it still you can just take it to your local Audi dealer. One thing to worry about would be pricing. If you saw crazy kanuck’s post earlier about how he wanted a 2011 with 65,000 miles and it was going for 26 grand.

It switches from V8 to SC V6 in 2013. The V8 is supposedly the scarier for maintenance, but that may just be age.

That blue is the only color you should consider.

Lol, thinking the same thing. I went from a 2012 S4 that was dead reliable for the 40k miles I owned it, sold it at 80k, and got a 2009 S8 with 50k... lets just say I have a couple grand set aside for just in case repairs. I’d suggest the same here. But it will be a blast to drive.

So mechanically you have two different cars.

-2009-2012 B8 S5 which has the 4.2 FSI V8

This V8 is NOT the same timing-chain nightmare of an engine that you find in the B6 S4's. It has a timing chain, yes, but it is a very different engine and the chain and guides are facing the front of the engine. The chain will eventually need to be replaced, but it is a far cheaper job because unlike the S4 you don’t have to pull the engine to do it (the engine in that car is flipped to face the firewall in order to fit), and the guides should not wear nearly as fast as in the S4.

-2013-2015 B8.5 S5 which is has the facelift and has the supercharged 3L V6.

This has proven to be a very reliable engine so far. More usable power than the V8, and much better economy. Of course, it doesn’t sound as good as the V8. It’s also a lot easier to tune if you want more power.

Either way, it’s a car that retailed for $50k-$60k brand new, prepare your maintenance budget accordingly. And because they both are direct-injection only, plan to get a carbon cleaning done every other year or so.

I think as far as maintenance goes, either will be cheaper than a V8 M3 to maintain and run, with the 3.0T being the cheaper of the two Audi engines. The 3.0T versions are also better looking IMO, and have slightly updated infotainment. If you don’t want a stick, the 3.0T also gets DSG, while the 4.2 would have Tiptronic.

That’s not a big deal. If it were an S4 getting a timing chain, the engine wouldn’t be in the car.

I do want a stick but that is a really good run through. Does the carbon cleaning have to be done at Audi or would I be able to do it with a plethora of tools at my parents shop

It requires specialized equipment. You could get it done at a dealer or an indy specialist, or you could possibly rent a walnut blaster.

Ohhhh I almost wish I hadn’t read about the V8. I didn’t know it was different than the S4. I can handle service position - I could probably handle the engine out too, but I’d reallllly rather not (coincidentally I pulled the my 7.3 after 220ish k because of a head gasket and injector cup I just couldn’t get sealed working under the hood).

Anyway, the 4.2 S5 just moved way up the “hmmm, maybe” list. Thanks? Yeah, thanks.
